Emergency Management Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Emergency Management around the country.

What We Do

Emergency management directors are responsible for overseeing emergency planning and processes designed to reduce health risks in urgent situations such as terrorist attacks, natural disasters, disease breakouts, and more. Unlike other public health experts, these professionals plan for long-term and acute responses to immediate concerns and health threats. After an emergency situation occurs, these professionals analyze the data and adapt responses to reduce population risk.

Work Environment

Emergency management directors will work at least full time in most cases, with on-call and overtime hours possible in cases of crisis. While emergency management directors often work in an office setting, some will also travel to meeting locations and sites for local resources. In between emergencies, the job will be filled with a lot of administrative duties, but it can be a very stressful and high-pressure work when crises do occur.

How to Become a Emergency Management

In order to become an emergency management director, you will need to gain a number of years of experience within high-stress jobs in medicine. These roles will help to prepare you for acting efficiently during an emergency situation where decisions will need to be made fast for large scale populations.

Training & Certification Requirements

Most of the time, even an entry-level role in the world of emergency management will need to be obtained with a bachelor’s degree. However, if you plan on specializing in a specific topic such as clinical treatment, vaccine research, or bioterrorism, then you will need to think about obtaining a master’s degree in emergency management, or even a doctorate level degree in your chosen subject. These advanced roles often place a great deal of emphasis on scientific expertise and lab research. The National Association of Safety Professionals or NASP also provides a voluntary program for certification that awards the designation of Emergency Management Specialist to those who take it. Candidates for this program will take a series of courses that cover emergency preparation, program management, command systems, and response to disaster situations before they take an exam online to earn their certification.
