Health Promotion Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Health Promotion around the country.

What We Do

Health promotion professionals teach people how to live a life that promotes their overall wellness. They create strategies and implement them to ensure that individuals and communities alike can improve on their health. These health professionals work together with community health workers, social service professionals, health educators, and others. They collect information on health concerns within population groups and engage with others to attempt to resolve these.

Work Environment

The majority of health promotion professionals work for local, state, or national government agencies. They can also be found in private, local, or state hospitals. Some are found within ambulatory health care services while others work for organizations, such as professional, civic, grant making, or religious groups. Lastly, they can be found within social assistance organizations.

How to Become a Health Promotion

To become a health promotion professional, you will need to hold a bachelor’s degree in health promotion or health education. In completing this degree, you will learn about the methods and theories around health education and health behavior. You will also obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to develop programs and materials for health education. Usually, an internship will also be required. Numerous organizations now require health promotion professionals to hold a master’s, or even a doctoral degree. The most appropriate graduate degrees are those in health promotion, public health education, school health education, or community health education. These programs accept students who have already graduated from a bachelor’s degree, but this does not have to be in a relevant subject.

Training & Certification Requirements

While there is no legal requirement for health promotion professionals to be certified, having the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential does set you apart from others. The CHES is offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. They have developed an entry level examination for those who have completed a bachelor’s degree. CHES certification has to be maintained through continuous education credits or by retaking the examination every five years. Those with a master’s degree can obtain the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) credential.
