What We Do

A patient care technician helps to look after sick and injured people. This health professional is supervised by a range of medical professionals, mainly registered nurses. They monitor patients’ vital signs, observe their behavior, help them with grooming and hygiene, move them between beds, empty their bedpans, and collect specimens. Patient care technicians also help to set up equipment and provide other assistants during examinations. Sometimes, they also help in certain areas, such as respiratory care, phlebotomy, and EKGs.

Work Environment

Patient care technicians can be found in a variety of different medical environments. These include state, private, and local hospitals, and also physician’s offices, care homes, and outpatient clinics. Additionally, with an increase in demand for in-home care, they can also be found in the homes of patients.

How to Become a Patient Care Technician

There are no set requirements for somebody to become a patient care technician, although training programs do exist at technical and community colleges. These courses usually take less than a year to complete. During these programs, those aspiring to become patient care technicians will take part in various classroom studies, and also in a range of supervised work experiences. Modules include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), advanced nursing skills, electrocardiogram (EKG), and phlebotomy. Some go on to complete the certified nursing assistant (CNA) program. Other requirements include criminal background checks, and applicants must show proof of immunizations, physical examinations and drug screenings. The curriculum includes classroom studies and supervised clinical education, which may come in the form of internships or externships. To complete this program, students must complete these learning modules: certified nursing assistant (CNA), phlebotomy, electrocardiogram (EKG), advanced nursing skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Training & Certification Requirements

Patient care technicians are usually expected to undergo a criminal background check, drug screening, and physical examination, and must also show proof of immunizations. Additionally, there are a number of voluntary qualifications available through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), including the National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) examination.
