Criminal Psychology Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Criminal Psychology around the country.

What We Do

A criminal psychologist works in forensics and uses psychological principles within the criminal justice system. A lot of the work involves evaluating suspects and their alleged victims. On the one hand, they assess whether a psychological problem could have caused the crime itself and, on the other hand, they assess the psychological impact of that crime. Additionally, they often work with defendants to determine whether or not they are fit to stand trial. They also conduct interviews with witnesses in order to establish a picture of the events surrounding the crime. Criminal psychologists rarely profile criminals, however, which is something that is usually left to forensic psychologists.

Work Environment

Criminal psychologists can work in a range of different fields. These include federal, state and local government, private consultancy, mental health centers, law enforcement agencies, academic institutes, correctional facilities, social work, and the justice system. With the popularity of criminal psychology television programs such as “Born to Kill?” and “Most Evil” rising rapidly, there is also an increased demand for these psychologists to appear on television shows.

How to Become a Criminal Psychology

To become a criminal psychologist, you must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. While this does not have to be in psychology, it is usually recommended to build a solid foundation of the subject area. After the bachelor’s degree, you must enroll in a two year master’s degree, where you can choose the medical psychology specialization. In order to call yourself a psychologist, you must also complete a doctoral degree, with is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinically based Psy.D.

Training & Certification Requirements

Each state has its own requirements in terms of licenses and certification for criminal psychologists. The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards both list what the requirements within each state are. Certification is usually valid for a certain period of time only, and must be maintained either through proof of continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
