Engineering Psychology Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Engineering Psychology around the country.

What We Do

Engineering psychologists are entering a relatively new area of employment. Engineering psychology is industrial-organizational psychology, which can be used to examine how people interact with technological systems and devices. These professionals often work within academic or government-based industries, researching the requirements that users have so that they might design more efficient work environments and equipment. Some of these experts will also be engaged in teaching jobs.

Work Environment

As an engineering psychologist, you should be able to find plenty of employment opportunities in a range of different fields. Engineering psychologists commonly work in areas such as computer science, software development, engineering, and aviation. However, because the easy use of medical equipment can mean the difference between life and death, engineering psychologists frequently work within the medical field.

How to Become a Engineering Psychology

Most engineering psychologists or industrial-organizational psychologists will begin their pursuit of a career of this type of psychology by earning their four-year bachelor’s degree in the topic of general psychology or a related field. However, it’s worth noting that it can be difficult to obtain even an entry level position in engineering psychology with anything less than a graduate degree. Before you enroll in a psychology degree program, it’s worth checking what you might need to become a fully licensed psychologist in the engineering industry.

Training & Certification Requirements

According to information revealed by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), most psychologists will hold a doctorate degree in their chosen subject. For engineering psychologists, the degree is often a doctor of philosophy in psychology with a concentration on the engineering aspect of psychological study, or a Ph.D. in human factors and psychology. While it is possible to obtain a career as an engineering psychologist with only a master’s degree, many people in this field choose to pursue their doctorate degree as it opens up more opportunities for the future.
