What We Do

An infection control specialist or infection preventionist is usually a registered nurse, who specializes in the process of preventing infections within a specific area, and stopping people from becoming sick. The term “infection preventionist” is just one of many that can be given to the professionals that work in this area, and they are sometimes also known as epidemiologists or infection control nurses. Regardless of their title, the duties are typically the same, and they revolve around stopping infection

Work Environment

Typical work environments for infection preventionists will vary widely according to the specific role a professional chooses to take within the disease control industry. Some will find employment simply working within an office setting, whereas others will be expected to conduct their duties from a laboratory position. Some travel is sometimes required, particularly those working for the government, and many workers will have full-time schedules, and enjoy normal hours.

How to Become a Infection Prevention

The first step in becoming an infection preventionist is earning a bachelor’s degree. Students will need to choose a specific discipline such as anatomy, chemistry, or biology in order to earn their qualification. It’s also possible to earn a bachelor of science in nursing then look for ways to specialize in infectious disease and infection. Though a bachelor’s degree is generally all that is required for obtaining a position as a registered nurse, many students consider obtaining their graduate degree. Graduate degrees can open the door for higher-paying and more attractive positions within the healthcare field.

Training & Certification Requirements

While not all of the workers within health-related professions are required to be licensed, registered nurses should be licensed in every part of the U.S once they complete their accredited BSN program. These nurses can choose to take the National Council Licensure Examination to obtain their position as a registered nurse. What’s more, all infection control professionals will typically need to get at least two years of experience working within their chosen field before they can get licensure. This experience can be earned through clinical practicum and internship opportunities. They may also earn voluntary certification in the area of infection prevention and control, offered by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). APIC’s certification exam can be administered by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology.
