Audiology Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Audiology around the country.

What We Do

An audiologist is responsible for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of people’s hearing and ear problems, including balance. These hearing health professionals do this by examining patients who indicate that they have a hearing problem, providing a diagnosis following an assessment of their examination results. They also provide treatment, including hearing aids and counseling on listening and communication. They also evaluate patients with a diagnosis to determine whether treatment is working, recording their progress and adjusting treatment as and when required. Lastly, they provide education on how to prevent problems related to the ear.

Work Environment

Around a quarter of audiologists work in the offices of other health practitioners, and another 25% work in offices of physicians. The remaining 50% can be found in private, local, and state hospitals, in private, local, and state educational services, and in health and personal care stores.

How to Become a Audiology

To become an audiologist, you will usually have to complete the Au.D. doctoral degree in audiology. This program takes around four years to complete and it is open to those who have completed a bachelor’s degree. During the doctoral program, you will take courses in physiology, anatomy, genetics, physics, abnormal and normal communication development, treatment and diagnosis, ethics, and pharmacology. You will also have to complete supervised work practice. In order to become licensed as an audiologist, most states demand the Au.D. has been provided by a program that is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation.

Training & Certification Requirements

All states require a license for audiologists. The type of license, however, varies from one state to another. It is usually recommended to have a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A), which the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association has developed. The American Board of Audiology also has credentialing options available. Often, certification is offered as part of a doctoral degree program, but not all programs have it. Hence, it is important to look into both what the program offers, and what the state you want to work in requires.
