Medical Billing & Coding Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Medical Billing & Coding around the country.

What We Do

Medical billing and coding professionals are specialists that can be referred to as medical records and health information technicians. These individuals have skills associated with managing the complex system used in medical invoicing for insurance and reimbursement. Most medical billing clerks will regularly be involved with coding medical procedures, preparing invoices, sending out bills to patients, and gathering data after appointments to determine the bill for a particular patient.

Work Environment

There are a range of different career opportunities for individuals in the medical billing and coding field. These medical care technicians might choose to work within a hospital, or physician-based billing and coding service, whereas others become specialized in a specific field of medicine. Jobs for these particular individuals are available in a range of medical facilities, including clinics, hospitals, and even private practices.

How to Become a Medical Billing & Coding

Becoming a medical billing and coding specialist begins with earning post-secondary education. Medical billing and coding educational programs are available at both the associates and certificate level. While both programs feature a range of similar courses, and can cover some of the same topics, those who earn associates degrees can continue their education at a bachelor’s level too. Nevertheless, you can obtain an entry-level position in the realm of billing and coding with a bachelor’s degree. Obtaining education that goes beyond the associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree levels can lead to further career opportunities, such as management positions in healthcare or insurance industries, and administrative duties.

Training & Certification Requirements

For medical billing and coding clerks and specialists, it is worth noting that certification is not often a requirement to gain employment. However, it is also important to know that some employers will give additional preference to candidates who have some form of coding certification in their belt. The AAPC, for example, offers the certified professional coder designation certification, which shows that those who are certified are proficient in reading medical charts and assigning codes to various medical services. According to surveys, coders who have advanced certifications will earn more than those without one. Jump to How to Get Training as a Medical Billing & Coding Specialist.
