Nurse Anesthetist Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Nurse Anesthetist around the country.

What We Do

A registered and certified nurse anesthetist is a form of advanced practice nurse who specializes in administering anesthetics to patients, as well as monitoring their vital signs and offering options in post-surgical care. These individuals frequently work alongside other healthcare professionals, including anesthesiologists, dentists, surgeons, podiatrists, and ophthalmologists.

Work Environment

A nurse anesthetist can find lucrative employment within a range of different healthcare settings, including clinics, hospitals, and even in outpatient facilities. Those who work within a hospital setting often find themselves in erratic shifts that can include weekend and nighttime hours.

How to Become a Nurse Anesthetist

Those who are aspiring to become a nurse anesthetist will need to begin by getting a bachelor of science in nursing degree. These degrees often take around four years to complete and are appreciated more than the corresponding associate degree programs for nursing. From that point, they will be eligible to earn their registered nurse license and apply for a position within a relevant master of science in nursing, with specialization in anesthesia. Students in these courses will learn to operate anesthesia equipment and manage situations in surgical and emergency circumstances. Many nurse anesthesia master’s degree programs will require applicants to have at least a single year of experience in a critical care nursing setting. Many RNs will be able to obtain that experience by working in an intensive care or cardiac unit.

Training & Certification Requirements

Every state requires all nurses to pass the national licensing exam for registered nurses to work in their chosen field. Importantly, some states may also have additional requirements in place. In order to apply to a nurse anesthesia program, your registered nurse license will need to be in good standing. Attaining your credential as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is important if you want to practice in this particular field. These certifications can be awarded to people with master’s degrees in nurse anesthesia who have taken and passed exams for an unrestricted RN license. The national certification exam for CRNA is administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
