Histotechnologist Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Histotechnologist around the country.

What We Do

Histotechnologists work with tissue specimens that pathologists require in order to diagnose their patients. These are professionals who investigate the microscopic structure of tissues.

Work Environment

Most of the time, a histotechnologist is employed in a private, state, or local hospital. They may also work in diagnostic and medical laboratories, or in offices of physicians. In some cases, they may work in private, local, or state professional schools, including colleges and universities. They often belong to a medical laboratory team that works with various specimens from humans, animals and plants to help in diagnosing abnormalities and illnesses.

How to Become a Histotechnologist

In most cases, histotechnologists only require a high school diploma or GED. However, with the commitment to improving the overall standard of health care, it is becoming more common for employers to ask for an associate’s degree or even a bachelor’s degree. It is important to be able to show at least a basic understanding of medical laboratory technology and life sciences. Courses should be accredited by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Training & Certification Requirements

There is no legal requirement for a histotechnologist to become certified or licensed. However, the CLIA-88 (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988), which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is one certification that people can opt for. This is generally available to those who have worked in the field for at least one year, and it demonstrates a commitment to professional standards.
