Medical Records Technician Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Medical Records Technician around the country.

What We Do

A medical records technician is responsible for the organization and management of data on the various patients. They focus on its quality, accessibility, accuracy, and security. The data is now most often in electronic form, although some paper files continue to exist. These technicians use a range of classification systems in order to categorize and code the information, which may be used for various purposes, including for insurance payments, registries, databases, and patient histories.

Work Environment

Around a third of medical records technicians work in private, local, and state hospitals. They may also be found in physicians’ offices, skilled nursing facilities, support and administrative services, and technical, scientific, or professional services.

How to Become a Medical Records Technician

In order to become a medical records technician, a post-secondary certificate is usually desirable. Some employers look for an associate’s degree in health information technology. During these programs, students learn about anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health data standards and requirements, insurance reimbursement, computer systems, and healthcare statistics. Admissions to these programs are quite competitive, and those who have taken classes in biology, math, computer science, and health during their high school program are more likely to be accepted. Some employers continue to accept those who have only completed high school or a GED. However, this is becoming a lot less common nowadays, particularly with the healthcare department’s commitment to improving healthcare standards.

Training & Certification Requirements

Certification is not mandatory, but it is preferred. Most employers who hire medical records technicians help them get certified if they haven’t done so already. A number of different certifications exist, including the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) and the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Some certifications require passing an examination, while others are provided upon graduation from accredited programs. Coding certifications, in particular, require demonstrable knowledge in coding, which is often obtained through on the job experience. Certifications must always be renewed, either through continuous education credits or by retaking the exam. In a number of states, medical records technicians who work with cancer patients, which are the CTR professionals, have to be certified in order to do their job.
