What We Do

An MRI technician works with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanners and machines in an effort to obtain images of the inner parts of the body to be used for diagnostics by physicians. Their specialty is in imaging scanners and all that is involved in using those. For instance, they will inject patients who require an MRI with a contrast dye, which enables specific images to become visible on the screen. These images are then used by physicians to perform a diagnosis. The contrast agent used in the dyes react to the magnetic fields, which allow for certain parts of the body or biological system to show up. They often work with stroke patients in order to determine if there is damage to the brain.

Work Environment

Just over half of all MRI technicians work in private, local, and state hospitals. In addition, they can also be found in diagnostic and medical laboratories, as well as physician’s offices. They can also be employed in stroke clinics.

How to Become a MRI Technician

Usually, in order to become an MRI technician, you have to complete an associate’s degree. There are also a number of graduate certificates available, as well as, increasingly, bachelor’s degrees. During these degree programs, students take part in classroom education in areas, such as image evaluation, radiation physics and protection, pathology, and anatomy. They also take part in practical course work, focusing on administering an MRI, injecting dyes, and patient care.

Training & Certification Requirements

Licensing and certification is not always required, but it is available and recommended to complete, as this demonstrates commitment to professional excellence. In order to be eligible for licensing, you must first complete an accredited degree program, after which you can take a certification examination. These are offered by the state if certification is required, or by various certifying bodies. MRI technologists usually become certified by the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT). It is important to contact your state health board in order to ascertain whether there are specific certification and licensing requirements in place.
