What We Do

A nuclear medicine technologist is responsible for the diagnostic medical equipment used in order to create images of specific parts of the body. They administer radioactive drugs that they have to prepare to patients, which make abnormal parts of a body look different on the image taken.

Work Environment

The nuclear medicine technologist mainly works in private, local, and state hospitals. Additionally, they can be found in physicians’ offices. They may also work in diagnostic and medical laboratories.

How to Become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist

A nuclear medicine technologist is usually expected to have completed an associate’s degree from a nuclear medicine program that has been fully accredited. In around half of all states, they must also be licensed. With improvements in the standard of health care, many nuclear medicine technologists now hold bachelor’s degrees as well. Alternatively, they may have completed a degree program in a field of health care, and then underwent a certificate program specific to nuclear medicine technology, which generally takes another 12 months. The accrediting body for these programs is the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Training & Certification Requirements

Around half of all states require their nuclear medicine technologists to be certified. Thus, make sure to check your specific state’s requirements. Certification is provided by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

The BLS has projected that there will only be a 2% growth in demand for nuclear medicine technologists between 2014 and 2024. That is much slower than the national average for other jobs. However, there may be some changes in these figures due to the fact that the aging population may have different, as of yet unknown requirements. Additionally, because of the advances in medicinal science, it is likely that things will change to some degree. That said, nuclear imaging is generally seen as an expensive form of treatment.
