What We Do

Obviously, an operating room technician works in operating rooms used for surgical procedures. They ensure that the room is ready, that the proper equipment are in place so that surgeons can do their job

Work Environment

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), some 70% of operating room technicians worked directly in state, local, or private hospitals. A small minority can be found in physicians’ offices if outpatient surgery is performed there, or in outpatient care centers.

How to Become a Operating Room Technician

Generally speaking, an operating room technician has to be educated beyond high school level, with most employers looking for someone with an associate’s degree. Relevant associate’s degrees can be found at universities, vocational schools, and community colleges, lasting anything from two months to two years. They grant associate’s degrees, including diplomas and certificates. Courses include such topics as pharmacology, medical terminology, biology, and anatomy. Additionally, there is a focus on setting up equipment and on controlling and preventing infections. The courses should include both classroom-based and practical experiences.

Training & Certification Requirements

There are a few states in which operating room technicians are required to be certified. This is because they have chosen to regulate this as part of their commitment to improving the standard of healthcare. In those cases, people should complete the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
