Pharmacology Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Pharmacology around the country.

What We Do

Pharmacology is a field that combines medicine and science in order to find drugs that can serve as cures for various health problems. It looks at how animals and humans respond to different drugs. Additionally, pharmacologists determine the right standardized medications. In addition, they test other products, such as preservatives, food coloring, and so on, to determine whether they are toxic or not. Lastly, they conduct clinical trials and report on these to various agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Work Environment

Pharmacologists mainly work in laboratories and in offices, where they write about the findings they have obtained in the laboratories. Usually, they do not have direct patient contact, except when they conduct clinical trials.

How to Become a Pharmacology

To become a pharmacologist, you must first complete an undergraduate degree in a biological science. Once that has been completed, a number of options are available to you. It is possible to complete a Ph.D. (philosophy doctor) on its on, or a dual Ph.D./M.D. (doctor of medicine) degree option. The Ph.D. pathway takes around six years to complete. The Ph.D./M.D. option usually takes between seven and either years and has a stronger focus on clinical skills and medical research. The final option is to earn an M.D. on its own, but choosing to specialize in research and not clinical practice.

Training & Certification Requirements

If pharmacologists at any point want to give certain drugs to humans, they must be a licensed physician. This, in turn, means completing between one and seven years of residency, followed by a licensing examination. The American Board of Clinical Pharmacology also certifies pharmacologists, either as clinical pharmacologists or as applied pharmacologists. In most states, holding one of those certifications is a requirement of the job. To maintain certification, pharmacologists must demonstrate participation in continuing education credits. Alternatively, they can retake the certification examination. The exact application requirements for the test will depend on whether someone wants to become a clinical or an applied pharmacologist, and mainly on education levels and residency completion.
