Addiction Nursing Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Addiction Nursing around the country.

What We Do

An addiction nurse is a type of RN (registered nurse) with a specialization in behavioral psychology and pain management. The role of this particular nurse is to make sure patients who are going through drug or alcohol rehabilitation are supported, and that they are educated on the importance of lasting sobriety and a healthy, clean lifestyle. During treatment, these nurses will monitor medication dosages, pain levels, as well as physical and mental symptoms and take appropriate actions.

Work Environment

Addiction nurses can work in various places, including private practices and hospitals. The majority, however, work in educational facilities and drug and alcohol rehab treatment centers. In these private locations and treatment centers, they are in close contact with patients who are going through treatment for their drug or alcohol dependencies. This rehabilitation process is a difficult period of time for the patients, and a big part of an addiction nurse’s role is to ensure that the patients are able to stay calm, giving them the best chance of staying sober while minimizing the possibility of having a relapse.

How to Become a Addiction Nursing

To become an addiction nurse, you should first complete an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. The vast majority of employers will look for the BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) degree, however. Additionally, you must pass the NCLEX-RN exam, which will give you a license to become a registered nurse. Addiction nurses must have been working as an RN for at least three years, as well as have 4,000 hours or more of relevant experience.

Training & Certification Requirements

All RNs have to first pass the NCLEX-RN exam in order to work as a nurse. In order to work as an addiction nurse, they must also meet further requirements specific for addiction certification. This is an advanced practice that can be completed through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board or ANCB.
