Ambulatory Care Nursing Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Ambulatory Care Nursing around the country.

What We Do

An ambulatory care nurse is a professional nurse responsible for treating patients in need of routine medical care for both chronic and acute illnesses, as well as injuries. These individuals work outside of a hospital setting, and often find themselves interacting with patients on an outpatient basis. During a typical day, an ambulatory nurse will treat a range of different patients with a variety of medical problems.

Work Environment

Most ambulatory care nurses will work beyond hospital settings, in places like physician clinics and offices. In addition, most hospital outpatient wings will also be willing to hire these outpatient nurses too. These health professionals typically work long hours, including during weekends and evenings.

How to Become a Ambulatory Care Nursing

For those who are looking to become an ambulatory nurse, it is important to get a bachelor’s degree in a related field. In addition, it is also worth noting that those who want to become ambulatory nurses will also have to work on mastering a number of basic nurse skills, such as detecting deviations from normal bodily functions, and performing procedures for phlebotomy, which is the practice of drawing blood from a patient.

Training & Certification Requirements

In order to become certified as an ambulatory care nurse, you will need to first hold a valid license as a registered nurse, or “RN”. This will involve earning your nursing degree or diploma, and taking the National Council of State Boards of Nursing licensing examination for registered nurses. After you have completed at least two years’ worth of experience as a registered nurse, alongside 2,000 hours worth of ambulatory care or telehealth experience, you will be ready to take the ambulatory care nurse certification test, which is given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Some ambulatory care nurses also go on to earn their master’s degree in nursing, or may even choose to return to school and get their DNP or PHD.
