As the title probably suggests, a forensics nurse is a type of health professional with specialized training within the field of forensics, or the practices involved in using scientific methods to collect evidence in order to solve crimes. Forensic nurses constantly find themselves immersed within the fascinating world of forensic science, and similarly to other nurses, they will be required to attend to the needs of ill and injured patients. However, these professionals have a specific agenda, acting as liaisons between the justice system and the medical field.

As most people would expect, forensics nurses work within a variety of medical settings. However, the majority of these particular experts will work within settings that have a higher percentage of victims of crimes, particularly in urgent care centers and emergency rooms.

How to Become a Forensics Nursing

Many regard the process to becoming a forensics nurse to be far more complicated than the process of becoming a traditional nurse. The reason for this is that forensic nursing is still a relatively new area in the nursing field, and not all employers are fully aware of the benefits that come with having a forensics nurse in their staff. With that in mind, if your goal is to work in forensics science you will need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing, become registered as an RN, and obtain a master’s degree with specialization in forensic nursing.

Training & Certification Requirements

The first step to certification as a forensics nurse is to complete nursing school and become a registered nurse. This can be done by passing the national licensure examination for registered nurses. You may then choose to take a continued course of education that includes both clinical and classroom training. Some people also choose to enroll in a school that offers a forensic nursing master’s degree program. To become certified, you will need to take a certification exam such as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, offered by the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
