The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Military Nursing around the country.
What We Do
Military nurses are professionals within the healthcare industry who are responsible for providing medical care to patients within military hospitals and clinics. These health professionals monitor wounds for infection, help to prepare surgeries and assist with postoperative and preoperative care. Other responsibilities for military nurses might include monitoring pain in patients, helping injured individuals learn how to properly care for themselves, and extending some emotional support. In times of peace, military nurses may help to look after active-duty personnel, retired military individuals and their dependents. They may also help to provide healthcare to emergency civilian patients.
Work Environment
Military nurses can work across the world, and may serve within the air force, marines, navy, or the army. Similar to other nurses, there is plenty of demand across the globe for military nurses with the skills to help their fellow men. These nurses can either choose to remain without specialization, or may choose to obtain a specialization, for instance, in the fields of psychiatric or critical care.
How to Become a Military Nursing
If you choose to become a military nurse, then you will first need to ensure that you can provide proof of your U.S. citizenship. Once that is accomplished, you will also need to earn your bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing. Many educational programs in nursing will require four years, while a master’s degree in nursing may be completed in a further two years. Some of the courses studied in such programs include clinical nursing, and primary healthcare. Any experience in a military environment may also help.
Training & Certification Requirements
The first training and certification requirement in place for military nurses is the need to obtain a registered nurse certification. This will require applying for a nursing license from the state board of nursing in your area. The next step will be to take your examination. Depending on career goals that you may have, you might also choose to apply for a military nursing commission so that you can find a job in the Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Army.
