Nursing Administration Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Nursing Administration around the country.

What We Do

A nurse administrator or certified nursing administrator, is a health professional who is responsible for offering patient care to individuals, mostly by means of overseeing and leading various staff members within a healthcare facility. Alongside providing healthcare and treatments to patients as needed, a certified administrator will also schedule staff and ensure that workers are constantly complying with all regulations and facility policies in place. Other duties might include evaluating and hiring healthcare personnel, training new employees, and making sure that all documentation and charts are completed.

Work Environment

Nursing administrators can find jobs in a variety of different healthcare settings, including laboratories, hospitals, and nursing care facilities or care homes. They may also find themselves managing a large team of nurses within a city hospital or working with small teams in care facilities.

How to Become a Nursing Administration

People who aspire to become a nursing administrator will need to begin by earning their bachelor of science degree in nursing. What’s more, all states will require a registered nurse to be licensed in order for him or her to practice. In addition to applying to the state board of nursing and paying all fees, the aspiring RN must pass the registered nurse examination. Importantly, the certification awarded to a registered nurse must be renewed every few years, according to the outlines set by the state board of nursing. Renewal requirements can vary, but can often include completing renewal applications, paying fees, and disclosing criminal actions.

Training & Certification Requirements

There are a range of certification options available to nursing administrators, and they are offered by the American Nurses Credentialing center. The options may include the nurse executive board certification. To become licensed as a nurse executive, an applicant must possess an RN license, as well as a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and plenty of experience within their chosen field. In most circumstances, applicants will also be required to complete 30 hours of ongoing education specific to administration.
