What We Do

Registered nurse case management specialists or case management nurses are responsible for coordinating access to services and patient care within healthcare environments. These managers can still work as a registered nurse, but they also take on additional responsibility in the form of delegating cases to the correct teams and assuring that schedules are properly set, in addition to performing a variety of other administrative duties. In general, most case managers will work in a supervisory capacity, and need to ensure that all patients receive the care they need.

Case management nurses will work in a variety of different settings according to where they are most needed. How to Become a Nursing Case Management

Those who are planning to become case management nurses will need to earn their bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree in nursing to begin with. Importantly, while two years can qualify you to earn your certification as a registered nurse, the expanded amount of training that is provided in a four-year bachelor’s degree program is often preferred by most employment bodies, which means that earning your bachelor’s degree could allow you to apply for a wider range of high quality jobs.

Training & Certification Requirements

Every board of nursing or government body will require a basic educational and licensing requirement for all registered nurses. For instance, most candidates will be required to show that they can demonstrate basic nursing skills and submit proof of their accredited training by passing the national licensure examination for registered nurses. Once they are licensed, these nurses will need to renew their license every two or three years depending on regulations in their given state. Registered nurses and aspiring case management nurses who want to earn the certified case manager credential may be able to advance their career this way, so long as they meet a range of eligibility requirements as they are outlined by the Commission for Case Manager Certification. Requirements in this instance might include the completion of a period of experienced employment, and more. Most candidates will be able to apply once they have worked for a year under a board-certified case manager.
