Occupational Nursing Careers + Salary Basics

The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Occupational Nursing around the country.

What We Do

An occupational nurse is a form of nursing professional who is responsible for focusing on safety within the workplace. While many people assume that only some workplaces are dangerous, the truth is that every workplace comes with its own set of hazards regardless of the occupations that are present. For instance, a factory worker might be injured by chemicals, while an office worker may suffer from carpel tunnel syndrome or eye strain.

Work Environment

Professional occupational health nurses can generally find a range of employment opportunities throughout standard clinics for health and hospitals. However, many companies and a range of high-level employers will choose to hire these nursing professionals as part of their own team. As such, occupational nurses can work within various different types of workplaces and industries.

How to Become a Occupational Nursing

The first step to becoming an occupational nurse is to recognize the educational requirements in your particular state. Remember that some occupational health nurses who work within entry-level positions will only have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which is the minimum level of academic training required to get their licensure as a registered nurse. In all cases, it is essential for any nurse to become licensed as a registered nurse if she or he wants to work as a nurse. In other circumstances, an occupational nurse may choose to become a certified nurse practitioner, having earned the equivalent of a master’s degree. Some of these nurses will work as clinical nurse managers, corporate nurses, and nurse consultants or educators.

Training & Certification Requirements

Regardless of your chosen level of educational training, if you want to earn a position as a certified occupational health nurse or health nurse specialist, you will need to obtain your certification which can be given by the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses. This certification will require you to pass a three-hour examination. Importantly, there are certain levels of experience that will be required for each certification, such as 3,000 hours of supervised experience. Occupational nurses who have become certified will be able to either focus their education on basic programs for nursing, or pursue a master’s degree to obtain various nurse practitioner education and skills before they apply for certification.
