What We Do
School nursing professionals are nurses who work within a school or educational facility. These health professionals are regarded largely to be some of the most important and crucial faculty members within any school. Most school nurses work hard on a regular basis to educate parents and students on health issues that they might be affected with, and many work as health educators, organizing programs that address common health issues involving students and faculty.
Work Environment
Most school nurses will typically work within a school or educational institution, often in a private or public elementary school, high school, or middle school. In certain circumstances, some of these nurses might find a job within juvenile correction facilities, children’s homes, and other educational areas.
How to Become a School Nursing
In order to become a school nurse, you must first get your license as a registered nurse. The National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) requires that each candidate for certification should be a registered nurse who will first need to hold a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, or in nursing. The bachelor of science degree in nursing often includes coursework in nutrition, science, health assessment, leadership, and more. The NBCSN, however, will also accept a wide variety of other majors that can be linked to the health field, such as chemistry, nutrition, and even social work.
Training & Certification Requirements
Once you have obtained your bachelor’s degree within a relevant subject related to health, you will be able to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses. This licensure is essential for all registered nurses within the United States, and is also a requirement if you hope to obtain your school nurse certification. The certification is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the exam generally covers a range of topics, designed to measure the competencies of entry-level nursing professionals.
